TECH TIP: C(K) Chamfer Lead
A C/K Chamfer lead is the same length as the C chamfer lead in that it incorporates 2 – 3 threads into the lead
length. As an optional standard this chamfer form is found on semi-bottoming taps with a 40 degree R.H. helix. After
complete production of the tap (including hard coating) with the C chamfer form – there is an additional flute grind
through the cutting chamfer at approximately a 20 degree helix. This chamfer will show its best results when used in
moderately tough materials that tend to produce long chips. The “helix correction” helps to cause an immediate ir-
regular chip flow as the chip formation is starting. This irregular chip flow helps to break the chip and allow it to flow
more freely up the flute. This geometry is very useful in applications where “birdnesting” is a common problem.
